Goals

Some Core Goals: 2011-2014

During the next term, it is my intention to work with Council to stay the course on current projects and commitments.

I also view the list below as some important goals for the next term:

HEALTH CARE:
I will continue to provide leadership and build relationships necessary which have resulted in upgrades to our hospital. I am equally committed to identifying and pursuing further enhancements to health care services, including the additional surgical services to Kootenay Lake District Hospital.

CITY OF NELSON CHILDCARE INITIATIVE:
Nelson should be a place where families have all the supports they need to ensure a high quality of life. I will continue to provide leadership on this file

THE ECONOMY:
The economy is on people’s minds and I believe that it is vital to think about the implications of what is happening across the world. We need consider more ways to support and promote our local businesses. It will be more important than ever to continue to foster ongoing relationships with local and regional service clubs and build partnerships with other levels of Government. Fiscal responsibility within local government is more important than ever.

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP:
To ensure that our environment is protected for future generations, I want to continue my work at the RDCK to improve current initiatives, including completion of a new waste management plan. I am committed to working with Council and City staff to ensure that all municipal projects are viewed using the “the four pillars of sustainability. I intend to ensure that we live up to the commitments we have made around climate change.

COMPLETION OF THE SKATEBOARD PARK:
It is my view that the youth of our community need access to recreation facilities that address a range of interests: I will personally continue to work with our RDCK partners on the development and construction of a skateboard park.

DOWN TOWN WATERFRONT MASTER PLAN:
We will begin to implement our recently completed Downtown Waterfront Master Plan. Which includes the redevelopment of the Cottonwood creek corridor and the restoration of the CP Station

PROMOTION OF NELSON:
No matter where I go, people have either been to Nelson and love it or can’t wait to visit. B.C. has hosted the 2010 Olympics and we have showcased our community and our province to the world. I intend to use the relationships I have built through my involvement with the RDCK  Board, Tri-Cities Mayors’ Committee,  and the FCM caucus to search for opportunities to promote and obtain appropriate opportunities for Nelson.  I want to be able to talk about our City and the numerous opportunities that exist to visitors, businesses and potential citizens.

COMMUNICATION POLICY AND STRATEGY:
Our current communication strategies will continue to be enhanced to ensure that there are greater opportunities to provide input and deepen understandings of issues and decisions facing Council.
